National Flood and Coastal Defence Database

The aim of this joint Defra & Environment Agency funded project is to provide a single, easily accessible and definitive store for all data on flood and coastal defences, which is available to all operating authorities to allow them to make better-informed, risk-based decisions on the implementation of flood and coastal erosion management.

It will also enable all operating authorities (Environment Agency and Local maritime Authorities) to comply with Defra's programme of High Level Targets, which aim to ensure effective delivery of flood and coastal erosion risk management.

The provision of better data and a greater understanding of flood and coastal defence risk will enable expenditure to be more effectively targeted at those areas with the greatest need, reducing flood and coastal erosion damages.

The Environment Agency is taking the lead on development and implementation.

When the database is fully populated it will hold information about the location, composition and condition of fluvial, tidal and coastal defences to identify areas at risk.
